The rainy season is upon us and with it wet roads, slippery sidewalks and puddles of unknown depths. It also may mean trading our outdoor bike rides for indoor exercise regimes. With this shift to poor driving conditions and new ways of moving our bodies we may experience a higher rate of auto related injuries and exercise based aches and pains. While you cannot forecast the weather or the position your Pilates instructor will twist you into this week; you do have control over how to reduce and eliminate pain and return the body to health. The most important thing to remember is to get treatment as soon as possible. A tight back that you ‘tweaked’ in last night’s dance class can quickly turn into a debilitating back spasm which requires time off from work. A whiplash injury that goes unnoticed the day following an accident may leave you so stiff and sore, it’s difficult to accomplish everyday tasks.
Restoring motion to an injured joint as soon as possible decreases the chance of long term injury and the tendency to compensate and avoid painful movements. Delayed treatment often means your body’s reflexive muscle spasms become the source of your pain long after the original injury is resolved. Early care can break the cycle of pain and interrupt your body’s reflex to initiate muscle spasms, so get care right away. Motor vehicle accidents may be covered by Personal Injury Protection Insurance (PIP) at no cost to you and at the NPWC, we accept most health insurance plans.
